Team Philippines - UnPLUG wins in international Software Freedom Day Competition

January 14th, 2007

A group of Filipino open source advocates recently made it big on a global scale through an initiative to automate student council elections.

The University of the Philippines Linux Users’ Group (UnPLUG), through its Halalan Open Source Voting System, won an award for Team Philippines in the Software Freedom Day (SFD) 2006 Competition.

Halalan was one of the winners in the “Best plan for FOSS deployment project on new server for community benefit” category, sharing the spotlight with Ceres, a Disaster Prevention and Rapid Response Network system from Peru’s Team Cultura Libre.

For winning in the category, UnPLUG received a System p5 510 Express Server worth US$8800 courtesy of IBM, one of the principal sponsors for the global SFD 2006 celebrations in cooperation with Software Freedom International.

Plans for the deployment of this powerful server are being discussed in UnPLUG’s mailing list. Nevertheless, it is certain that the main goal of winning the server is to witness the realization of Halalan being used in the 2008 University Student Council elections, on the University of the Philippines’ Centennial Foundation Year.

SFD is an annual worldwide celebration of the virtues of Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) and is a public education effort to encourage its use to the public. Established in 2004, it has been decided that it be held on the third Saturday of September starting 2006.

Team SFD Philippines 2006 is composed of The UP College of Engineering - Department of Computer Science (UP COE-DCS), UP Computer Center (UPCC), Association for Computing Machinery - UP Student Chapter (ACM-UP), Alpha Phi Omega Fraternity (APO) - UP Diliman Chapter, Bluepoint Institute of Higher Technology Foundation, UnPLUG, and the Philippine Linux Users’ Group (PLUG). The team celebrated the local SFD celebration at the University of the Philippines - Diliman College of Engineering Theater.

More information about SFD can be found on its homepage at http://softwarefreedomday.org/, and the complete list of winners in the 2006 SFD Competition can be found at http://softwarefreedomday.org/Competition2006/Winners.
